Art

I love Art time on Fridays, I really like watching what the kids come up with. N especially likes art, B, I think could take or leave it. Of course the littles enjoy anything that involves a chance to be messy!

We are right now going through art books by Joyce Raimondo, I just love these books, I got one last year at the library, and knew it would be our art for this year. There are 5 books in the series, all covering different types of art, showcasing famous art works, a small lesson, and then a couple projects to do.

2nd Grade week in review

We're still kind of in review mode with alot of subjects, not really getting into good meaty topics yet! I'm looking forward to the next couple weeks and getting into all the good stuff!

Right now, we're undecided on Noeo Science . I love all of the books, and way the material is presented. But, it may be a bit over B's head, we're giving it another couple of weeks, to see if we are liking it any better. I'm hoping we do, it has so much fun stuff scheduled with the cirriculum we chose!

B's currently reading 2 books, More stories from Grandmas attic, which I really love, its such a cute book! And, Red Sails to Capri, which seemed more like a Daddy type of book, so they're reading through it together at bedtime.

Kindergarten week in review

Every Friday, I am going to try to post what we've done the past week, books we're reading, interesting things we've learned, art projects, etc.

This week, in Kindy, we're working with the letter B, so in addition to assigned work, we try to incorporate fun hands on activities, so our preschoolers can learn along with us.

We did 2 different art projects with "B"

For Butterfly, we colored some dry pastas with markers, and then glued them on leaves.

For Bubbles, we diluted some tempra paint, then added a little dishsoap to it. The boys then got to use straws to blow bubbles in the cup of paint, and then by putting a sheet of paper on top of the bubbles, this is what we got! They had tons of fun doing this!

We're currently reading the boxcar children at bedtime, such a fun book, all of my boys love it.

We've also done some counting in math, and learning about weather in science.

Another fabulous resource

All summer I was super apprehensive about how it was going to be, have 2 kids, 2 different grade levels to teach this year, not to mention 2 more who tend to get into things running around! Our first day was not one of my better days, and I really questioned whether I was going to be able to do this! So, I did what I do best, and scoured the net, blogs, etc. trying to find ideas that would be helpful in getting us through the day.

I somehow came across Managers of their homes and it truly was what we needed! It may be a bit more structured and scheduled than what will end up working for us, but the overall idea was exactly what I was looking for. We've just started working with it, and seeing how it works, but already I can see that our days are going to go so much more smoothly!

Fabulous Site

My boys loved doing the activities from Think! last year, we're going to pick it back up this year too! Its fun to sit back and let them create and see what they are able to come up with!

Back to school!

We've completed day 3 now of the new year. The first day was a bit rough, trying to adjust to now teaching 2, instead of 1, but we're falling into a groove that I think will work for us. I have great hopes for the new year!

Obligatory first day of school shots! Since we don't do back to school outfits/backpacks, everyone writes their name and decorates, its fun to see how names change each year!

Summer Science

After 1 week of being out of school, B has already said he misses it (me, still enjoying the break!). He asked if we could do science projects over the summer, and picked chemistry, so we got a few books from the library.

This is the one we're starting with:

The first project we're working on is can a raw egg bounce? We tried it with a normal raw egg, this is the result:

to be continued........

well, it didn't work so great! B & N's broke, G's worked a bit, but only from about 3 inches off the ground!
